Nathalia VIC Underground House | Earth-Sheltered Home Design - BALDWIN O'BRYAN ARCHITECTS

House at Nathalia, VIC

Earth-sheltered family residence — thermal mass, bushfire resilience, and landscape integration.

Set within the agricultural plains of northern Victoria, the Nathalia earth-sheltered home explores how concrete vaults and earth berms can deliver quiet interiors, stable year-round comfort, and protection from bushfire conditions. The building’s curved shells tuck into the site, minimising visual impact while framing sheltered courtyards and long views.

Design Intent

The residence is conceived as an earth-integrated home with a restrained street presence and a set of inward-facing outdoor rooms. The vaulted shells span generous living zones while keeping the overall height low and sheltered. Courtyards carve daylight into the plan and create microclimates for year-round use.

Sustainability & Performance

Passive solar design drives the envelope: thermal mass from the concrete vaults evens diurnal swings, earth berms moderate temperature, and carefully oriented glazing provides winter gain with summer shading. Cross-ventilation runs along the vaults, supported by high-level openings and protected outdoor terraces. Planting on the berms restores habitat and reduces heat island effect.

Bushfire & Weather Resilience

The earth-sheltered form reduces exposed elevations and combustible elements, supporting high BAL performance. Continuous concrete shells, ember-resistant detailing, and minimal roof edges help protect from radiant heat, ember attack, and wind-driven debris common in the region.

Architectural Detailing

Inside, the arched geometry delivers clear spans and a calm acoustic quality. A natural palette—off-form concrete, timber, and soft light—balances robustness with warmth. Large sliders open to the courtyards, extending living areas outdoors under sheltered eaves.
