Earth-Sheltered Home Concept — Coastal Bushfire Resilience
Conceived for a dramatic coastal slope above Bass Strait, this Wye River residence embraces the land to elevate life safety, comfort and durability. Arched concrete vaults, earth berms and a living roof temper wind and temperature extremes while delivering unobstructed ocean views.
Design Intent
The proposal developed for Wye River leverages earth sheltering to lower a home’s profile and exposure to radiant heat, ember attack and extreme winds. The primary structure is a series of reinforced concrete vaults, backfilled and contoured to read as a dune from the road while opening the living side to the sea.
Daylight enters via recessed seaward glazing and carefully shaped light-scoops, maintaining passive gains without inviting flame contact. A protected entry and courtyard create a calm microclimate on high wind days.
Bushfire & Climate Response
- Non-combustible envelope (concrete vaults, steel, mineral finishes).
- Earth berms as radiant heat shields; recessed glazing with ember-resistant detailing.
- Minimal external projections; integrated screens and shutters where required.
- Green roof for protection, stormwater attenuation and thermal buffering.
- Cross-ventilation paths sized for summer sea breezes; night-purge strategy.
Planning Note
This scheme was prepared prior to the December 2015 fires. In the aftermath, approval pathways were significantly constrained and the commission was discontinued. The concept remains a useful reference for BAL-FZ aligned thinking along exposed coastal escarpments.
Material & Detailing Palette
Structure: in-situ concrete vaults with integral ribs.
Roof build-up: waterproofing, protection course, drainage, engineered soil, coastal planting.
Openings: recessed, shaded glazing; ember-resistant screens & seals.
Interiors: timber linings to soften acoustics; polished concrete thermal mass.
Performance Objectives
Thermal Comfort
Sub-soil coupling and mass moderation target stable indoor temperatures year-round with modest active conditioning.
Durability
Salt-laden winds, ember attack and rainfall events inform a robust, low-maintenance envelope and drainage strategy.
Ecology
Green roof and berm revegetation knit the home back into site ecology, limiting visual impact from public vantage points.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an earth-sheltered home right for a BAL-FZ site?
It can be — the strategy reduces exposed combustible surfaces and shields radiant heat. Each site requires BAL assessment, geotechnical study and detailing to suit local conditions.
Can the vault geometry be adjusted?
Yes. Vault span, rise and rhythm are tuned to program, structural efficiency and view corridors.
How do you ventilate an ‘underground’ home?
Through oriented openings, protected light-scoops and concealed paths that encourage stack and cross-flow while retaining shielded, ember-resistant edges.
